Industries in the hinterland
Diverse industries are represented in the hinterland of the Port of Nagoya: automobile manufacturers, precision makers of machine tools and appliances, steel plants and oil refineries, aerospace companies, and porcelain and textile manufacturers. The GDP of the Chubu Region, which is made up of nine prefectures, amounts to 94 trillion yen and accounts for 18 % of the total GDP in Japan (FY2005 figures). This region forms an enormous economic entity in itself. According to a trade report conducted by the Nagoya Customs office, the total value of trade that passed through our port in 2007 was 16.7 trillion yen, edging out that at other major ports to mark the top figure in Japan.  Of particular note is that the total value of goods exported from the port was approx. 11.7 trillion yen, accounting for 14.0 % of the national export value. This indicates the strong competitiveness of our hinterland as a center for manufacturing.
