Shared-use Depot Launched - Collaboration with the neighboring Port of Yokkaichi
Development of shared-use depots that will reduce inefficient container drayage, road congestion and
transport costs between the Ports of Nagoya and Yokkaichi, both located within the Ise Bay Area, is
underway in both port districts.  A shared-use depot at the Port of Nagoya opened this month at
Nabeta Pier with a total area of 8 ha and a holding capacity of 1,005 chassis.  Meanwhile, the Port
of Yokkaichi plans to put into operation a 5.2 ha depot with 531 chassis lots, of which the first 1.5 ha
of land with 150 lots opened last year.  The remaining area is expected to be available by the end
March, 2008.  The Ports of Nagoya and Yokkaichi are working together to develop shared depots as
part of the Super Hub Port program led by the national government, with the aim of facilitating
containerflows between the two ports. Currently, the two ports suffer an imbalance of
incoming/outgoing containers used in domestic feeder transport, and the insufficient container
stowage space outside container terminals creates gate congestion as empty containers are brought
in and out of the terminals.

-Port Users Assembly Hosts Port of Los Angeles Delegates.
On October 12, a large function attended by 450 people from the local port industry was held at a hotel in downtown Nagoya.  Each year, a reputable keynote speaker is invited to make this event special.  The year 2007 is the centennial year for both the Port of Nagoya and its sister port, the Port of Los Angeles.  To celebrate this coincidence we were honored to have Mr. Dennis Zine, Councilman of the City of Los Angelesa and Ms. Kathryn MacDermott, Deputy Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles at this function.  Following Mr. Zine's warm and friendly greetings, Ms. MacDermott made a presentation on the Port of Los Angeles that covered its history, current situation, and various challenges including environmental issues and port security.
The following day, October 13, was the day of the Nagoya Festival.  It is an autumn tradition in Nagoya, with the main feature being a magnificent parade that consists of several smaller processions with different themes. The delegations from the Ports of Los Angeles and Nagoya participated in one of the processions called the Flower Car Parade.  A special float decorated with flowers and distinctive features of the Port of Nagoya was prepared for this occasion, on which representatives from both Ports appeared to promote their 100th anniversary celebrations in the city center, which is about 10 km away from the port district.

-Port's First-half Trade Figures 2007
On October 1, the Statistics Center of the Nagoya Port Authority released the provisional statistics for the first six months of trade (Jun.-Sep.) for 2007.  According to the center's report, the Port of Nagoya handled a record high volume of cargo for a six-month period, breaking the 2006 figure for the same period, which was the historic high.  Ships arrivals and container throughput also exceeded last year's records.  Factors contributing to this healthy growth in trade were the growing exports of automobile parts, industrial machinery, miscellaneous chemical products and steal materials to China, which made that country the Port's biggest trading partner in exports for the first time, surpassing the volumes of Australia and the United States.  Exports also increased to the UAE and Oman, due to strong automobile trade.  Meanwhile, imports from Australia declined, especially in such items as iron ore and coal.  For detailed figures, please visit our statistics page.

-Prince and Princess Akishino Take Part in the Port's Centennial Celebration
As part of the Port's centennial celebrations, Marine Festa Nagoya - Marine Festival 2007, was held from July 14 though 22.  A highlight of the festival was the commemorative ceremony on 19 attended by Prince and Princess Akishino, senior government officials and about 530 guests closely associated with the Port of Nagoya.  The ceremony started with a performance by local school children, followed by an opening statement by Mr. Takehisa Matsubara, Mayor of Nagoya City and President of the Nagoya Port Authority.  Mr. Matsubara said "The Port of Nagoya celebrates its centennial anniversary this year, and we are poised for further development as we set sail for another journey of 100 years."
Following the opening speech, Prince Akishino gave a congratulatory speech, in which he expressed his "sincere hope that the Marine Festa serves to promote people's interest in the sea and deepen understanding of the relations between people and the sea."  On behalf of the Prime Minister, Mr. Seiji Suzuki, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary delivered a message, "The role of the sea has become increasingly important in recent years, while the marine-related problems that Japan faces are becoming more challenging than ever, including the aggravation of marine contamination, overexploitation of marine resources, increasing accidents at sea, maritime terrorism, and tension over natural resources lying under the sea bed."  Minister Fuyushiba, Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport added, "It is a very important year for Japan's maritime policy, when the Marine Basic Law is enacted and enforced.  In this crucial time, the Marine Festa held at the Port of Nagoya is also marking a milestone."  After the speeches, awards were given to recognize people who have made remarkable contributions and achievements for the betterment of the Port.

The Marine Festa started in 1986, in order to reaffirm the meaning of Marine Day National Holiday, when people appreciate the blessings of the sea and wish for the prosperity of the maritime state of Japan.  The festival is held in major port cities in Japan every year. This is the first time in 19 years that the Marine Festa was held in Nagoya.

-IHI to Resume Building Cargo Ships
Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. will resume shipbuilding at its Aichi Works located at the Port of Nagoya. The company reportedly received an order for five 56,000-dwt class handy-max bulkers, of which the first vessel will be delivered in autumn 2008.
It will be the first time the plant has turned out a ship since 1996, when production was stopped after delivering 4,000-teu containerships.@The company will invest hundreds of millions of yen (millions of dollars) in the project, and possibly three billion yen more, with an eye to building floating storage units for LNG vessels.
During the last decade, when shipbuilding was suspended, the shipyard has been manufacturing maritime structures including bridges, shield machines, hydraulic devices, and deck cranes.@The Aichi Works of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd, one of Japan's leading shipbuilders, lies on the east side of the Port of Nagoya, where most other heavy industry in the Port operates. The dry dock opened in 1973, when Japan was experiencing a shipbuilding boom, and has been referred to as one of the three one-million-ton docks in Japan together with Nagasaki Shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Ariake Shipyard (Kumamoto Pref.) of Universal Shipbuilding Corporation, because the facility boasts a 890-m long, 92-m wide dock, and two goliath cranes with hoisting capacity of 400 tons.

- Super Hub Port Effect: 24 billion JPY
The Nagoya Port Authority recently released the results of its study "Impact on Regional Economy Provided by the Port", which show the clear and positive effects brought by the model berth of the "Super Hub Port" Project (TS2 at Tobishima South Side Container Terminal), with a 23.7 billion JPY production inducement and a 1,442 employment inducement. The economic and employment impact of the entire Port is estimated 28 trillion JPY, 38% of the total GDP of Aichi Prefecture, and 1.05 million jobs, a quarter of the jobs in the prefecture.
The research was conducted from two different perspectives-consumer lives and industrial activities.
The effects of the port were analyzed quantitatively so that the role, magnitude, and needs to strengthen the functions of the Port can be widely disseminated to the public. Meanwhile, in order to assess the port's impact on industrial activities, questionnaires were conducted among port-related businesses in the region including companies operating within the port boundaries. The impact generated by TS2 berth was calculated from the number of ship calls per year.

- Mitan Joins to Accelerate Centennial Anniversary Project!
The Port of Nagoya has already hosted a number of centennial anniversary events since the beginning of this year, most of which have been promoted by our Port's mascot Portan. The core functions will take place in the coming months through the summer, and even hard-working Portan will probably be desperate for help! Knowing how anxious Portan must be, Mitan, a new female character, has joined Portan to promote the celebrations.
Mitan and Portan are expected to work together in the following upcoming events: Marine Festa Nagoya - Marine Festival 2007 (July-August), Port Festival Fire Works Exhibition (July 21), and Sister Port Festival (October). The highlight will be a series of functions to be held during the anniversary week of November 10.@In this nine-day period, the main jubilee celebration and Minato Ward Festival will take place.
The 100th anniversary projects include various events and erection of monuments, with a fundamental principal of "celebrating the centennial milestone of the port, which supports the Chubu Region as the manufacturing center, among all communities, publicizing the history and importance of the port both at home and abroad, and envisaging together the continuing development of the Port in the century to come." Five sculptures of Portan will be built and displayed in Garden Pier, and a time capsule containing a message for 100 years in the future will be buried in the vicinity.

- Port's First Marina Opens in Shinmaiko
On April 19, an opening ceremony for the new Shinmaiko Boat Park was held at South-5 Section of the Port of Nagoya.@This is the Port's first public marina capable of accommodating various types of pleasure boats. The facility was developed by the Nagoya Port Authority with an aim to promote legal moorage, facilitate marine recreation, and enhance the maritime environment including harbor scenery. It includes three floating piers with the capacity to hold 210 boats in total. The main gate is equipped with an electronic lock to enhance security of the facility while allowing round-the-clock access to the facility.
Mr. Takashi Yamada, Executive Vice President of the Nagoya Port Authority delivered a speech on behalf of the Authority, in which he stated that "the facility is a commemorative one launched in the Port's centennial year", and "with the inauguration of the boat park as a milestone, the Port will promote public education for legal mooring of boats within our port areas." In order to make the event special, Ms. Sayaka Kawamura, Miss "Marine Day", made her appearance at the marina from the sea by boat to take part in the ceremony.
In addition to this new facility, the South-5 Section already has an artificial beach "Blue Sun Beach", and Shinmaiko Marine Park. The area is expected to attract increasing attention as a place offering people opportunities to enjoy various marine sports.

-Nabeta: Our fastest-growing terminal, bolstered by booming Asian trade
The Nabeta Container Terminal, managed by the Nagoya United Container Terminal (NUCT), handled a record high volume of 842,579 TEU in FY2006 (April 2006-March 2007). This was a 7% increase from the same period of the previous year.  Average container volume per month also rose, reaching more than 70,000 TEU.  Throughput at this terminal has steadily grown since it opened in May 2001, and its FY2006 record is one of the largest among other terminals operating in Japan under the same two-berth system.  Meanwhile the number of vessel calls showed negative growth (2,437 calls) for the first time due to the size increase in oceangoing containerships.  It still receives, however, an average of 203 calls a month by containerships.  Major clients are Chinese and Korean shipping lines.
Trade at the terminal consists of 60% imports and 40% exports.  The volume is about to reach the terminal's capacity, and shipping lines are calling for urgent development of a third berth. To seek further efficiency, NUCT announced that it would add three hybrid RTGs, bringing the total number of yard cranes to 24.  The main box handling equipment in the two-berth terminal is top lifters and straddle carriers.  The eco-friendly cranes are manufactured by Mitsui Engineering & Ship Building Co., Ltd. and TCM.  With the introduction of these hybrid cranes, which will reduce the environmental burden of the Port, NUCT aims to promote box tiering efficiency, and eventually boost its box handling capacity.
NUCT was jointly established in 2001 by eight companies operating at the Port of Nagoya: Isewan Terminal Service, Kamigumi, Tokai Kyowa, Nippon Express, Fujitrans, Misui-Soko, Mitsubishi Logistics, and Meiko Trans.

- Asuka II Departure Ceremony at Nagoya
On March 7, the Association for the Promotion of Utilization of Nagoya Port held a send-off ceremony for the Asuka II, the first passenger vessel commemorating the Port's 100th anniversary. The Asuka II, which is the largest passenger vessel registered in Japan (241m in length, 29.6m in width) was berthed at the Garden Pier, and her elegant appearance impressed all spectators.
After all passengers boarded, the ceremony was begun and the atmosphere was livened by a marching band performance by the Nagoya City Fire Bureau Band.
Mr. Takashi Yamada, Executive Vice President of Nagoya Port Authority, delivered greetings in which he said, "Nagoya Port has been the nation's No. 1 port in cargo-handling volume and trade value for several years. At same time, we are continuing our best efforts to create a pleasant port for people. We hope this event will serve to promote passenger vessels and make a closer connection between the Port and area residents."
As a highlight of the ceremony, pyrotechnists fired off traditional cylinder-shaped, handheld-type fireworks, and celebrated the departure of the Asuka II.
The Port's 100th anniversary mascot, Portan, also joined the ceremony, and gave the Asuka II a hearty send-off with waves of both its hands.
Built as the Crystal Harmony in 1990, the Asuka II received her present name in February, 2006. Her cabins are all ocean-viewing, and 54% of them even have balconies. In addition to the variety of facilities, warm hospitality helped to make the cruise pleasant for all passengers.
This was her fourth call to the Port as the Asuka II since her first call on March 3, 2006. With 760 passengers, she voyaged to Kochi prefecture and returned to Nagoya safely on the morning of March 9, 2006.

- Nagoya tops other Japanese ports in cargo value for sixth year in a row
On January 25, Nagoya Customs released the provisional trade statistics report for 2006.  It shows that the value of both imports and exports passing through the Port of Nagoya last year increased more than 18%, a record high.  The total trade value, which is the sum of import and export values, was again the largest among all ports in Japan.

The value of total exported cargo hit the ten trillion JPY mark (10 trillion 300 billion JPY), which placed our port first with a huge lead of about 2.5 trillion JPY over second ranking Port of Yokoyama.  The major contributor to this favorable result was robust automobile shipments.  The manufacturing industries in Greater Nagoya are thriving.
Port Export (million yen) Growth from 2005 Ranking
Nagoya 10,303,148 18.0% 1
Yokohama 7,802,135 9.1% 2
Kobe 5,745,287 11.3% 3
Tokyo 5,025,438 7.2% 4
Osaka 2,943,379 16.8% 5

Imports reached 4 trillion 600 billion JPY, which was a significant increase of 26.5% over the previous year.  This big leap was mainly due to the rise in oil prices last year.
Port Import (million yen) Growth from 2005 Ranking
Tokyo 6,981,230 13.9% 1
Nagoya 4,565,072 26.5% 2
Osaka 3,878,847 13.8% 3
Yokohama 3,868,734 15.6% 4
Kobe 2,673,653 8.9% 5

Total cargo value in 2006 approached 15 trillion JPY, ranking Nagoya first among all Japanese ports with an enormous margin of 2 trillion JPY over the Port of Tokyo, which ranked second.  The Port of Nagoya's market share in the nation is a remarkable 10.4%, meaning that a full tenth of Japanese trade is handled at our port.
While the Central Japan International Airport, located just beyond the boundaries of the port, has shown sustained growth in air freight handling since it opened in 2005, processing cargo worth of 209 billion JPY in 2006, an increase of more than 40% from the previous year.  Although this throughput is only a fraction of that of Narita Airport, "Sea & Air" transport including the ongoing aircraft-related cargo forwarding project will accelerate the cargo increase in the years to come.
Port Total (million yen) Growth from 2005 Ranking
Nagoya 14,868,220 20.5% 1
Tokyo 12,006,668 11.0% 2
Yokohama 11,670,869 11.2% 3
Kobe 8,418,940 10.5% 4
Osaka 6,822,225 15.1% 5

- Ten Biggest News Items for 2006
At the end of December, the Nagoya Port Authority announced the Port's 10 biggest news items for the last 12 months. The top news was that the Port's estimated total trade for the year marked a historical record of 260 million tons, a 10.1% increase over the previous year. For detailed figures, please visit our statistics page.
The new "Sea & Air" comprehensive transport mode ranked the fifth of ten. The idea has widely been promoted in conjunction with the opening of the new international airport just beyond the port boundary in February 2005. "Sea & Air" fulfills the functions of both sea and air ports and allows our users to choose the best logistics solution for them.

In fact, several companies that supply components for Boeing's new generation 787 aircraft produce main wings and fuselages at plants located in the port district. These parts make the short trip to the airport by sea, from where they are forwarded by air on special cargo planes to an assembly plant in the United States. The inauguration of a logistics center at the port, which consolidates necessary parts for aircraft components, furthered the efficiency of this production system. Meanwhile, the construction of a designated road is also being undertaken at the airport.
