Ports of Los Angeles and Nagoya Celebrate 65th Anniversary of Sister Port Agreement

On August 20, 2024, the Ports of Los Angeles and Nagoya celebrated 65 years of friendship with a ceremony in Los Angeles.
The Nagoya Port Authority’s first Sister Port Affiliation was established with the Port of Los Angeles in 1959. Over the past 65 years, our two ports’ relationship has included a wide range of activities such as mutual understanding and trade development between our two regions and environmental cooperation.

Attendees at the ceremony from the Port of Nagoya included Mr. Kenji Sakata, Chairperson of Nagoya Port Assembly, Mr. Yuji Kamata, Executive Vice President and more than 35 people from public and private entities related to the port business in Nagoya.

The ceremony began with an opening congratulatory address by Chairperson Sakata. Following this, Mr. Eugene D. Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, offered his congratulations on this long-lasting relationship and Ms. Lucille Roybal-Allard, President of Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners proposed a toast. The ceremony was an excellent opportunity for attendees from both ports deepen communication and friendships.

The ceremony ended with an exchange of gifts between Mr. Seroka and Mr. Sakata to commemorate and further strengthen this irreplaceable relationship.

Visit of China Ports and Harbours Association delegation

A delegation from the China Ports and Harbours Association came to the Port of Nagoya for training over 7 days from August 5th to 11th. During that time, they toured port facilities and related companies at the Port of Nagoya and received lectures on port management in Japan. The Port of Nagoya has accepted trainees from ports and related organizations in China every year since 1985 to deepen friendship and promote trade between Japan and China.

A series of new container routes were opened at the Port of Nagoya.

On June 20th, the Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine Corporation began calling at the Port of Nagoya on its “ANP” service linking the west coast of North America, Asia, and the Middle East. In addition, PanStar, a South Korean shipping company, opened a regular container liner service between Japan and South Korea, and on July 5th, the container ship Honor Voyager (634 TEU) arrived at Nabeta Pier for the first time.

Last November, Mr. Yuji Kamata, Executive Vice President of Nagoya Port Authority and Mr. Hiroyuki Sato, then-President & CEO of Nagoya Yokkaichi International Port Corporation, visited the Evergreen Marine Corporation at Taipei. In May of this year, they along with Mr. Shigeto Sumi, President of Nagoya United Container Terminal Corporation, visited PanStar in South Korea to present an outline of the Port of Nagoya and its container terminals in an effort to further promote the use of the port.

Ambassador of Belgium visits the Port of Nagoya

On May 14th, Belgian Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Antoine Evrard visited the Port of Nagoya with parties from the Flanders Investment & Trade and Wallonia Export-Investment Agency. This was Ambassador Antoine Evrard’s first time visit to the Port he took up the post of Belgian ambassador to Japan last fall. Representatives from companies at the Port of Nagoya that are expanding their business in Belgium—Meiko Trans Co., Ltd., Isewan Terminal Service Co., Ltd. and Toyofuji Shipping Co., Ltd.—and the Nagoya Port Authority were present and exchanged information, including an introduction to and the present status of logistics at the Port of Nagoya.

NPA participates in first annual meeting under the MOU between Japanese MLIT and Singaporean MOT

On April 18th, the first annual meeting on cooperation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a green digital shipping corridor was held in Singapore under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and the Singaporean Ministry of Transport (MOT). The Nagoya Port Authority (NPA) participated in this meeting as a port partner.*

At this first meeting, the participants confirmed the areas of cooperation to be undertaken in the future, including decarbonization, usage and supply of ammonia fuel , and cyber security, and agreed to continue discussions and to hold a second meeting in Japan in 2025.

*At the time of the signing the MOU (December 2023), eight parties were involved: Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Ports and Harbors, City of Yokohama Ports and Harbors Bureau, Kawasaki City Ports and Harbors Bureau, Nagoya Port Authority, Osaka Ports and Harbors Bureau, City of Kobe Ports and Harbors Bureau, PSA, and Jurong Port. Two additional parties, the Yokohama Kawasaki International Port Corporation and Hanshin International Port Corporation, have now joined, bringing the total to 10 parties.

Agreement with the China Ports and Harbours Association has been renewed

On March 29, 2024, a delegation from the China Ports and Harbours Association visited the Port of Nagoya to renew an agreement for the mutual sending of trainees.

The Port of Nagoya has been receiving trainees from Chinese ports since 1985 under an agreement with the Ministry of Transport of China, and since 1997, it has been dispatching staff to China as part of the mutual dispatch program. The agreement related to this program has been handled by the China Ports and Harbours Association since 2019.

Ports of Fremantle and Nagoya Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Sister Port Agreement

On January 31, 2024, the Ports of Fremantle and Nagoya celebrated 40 years of a sister port relationship with a ceremony at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle.
The ceremony was attended by Mr. Yasushi Naito, Consul General of Japan in Perth, Ms. Hannah Fitzhardinge, Mayor of the City of Fremantle, and more than 30 people from public and private entities related to the port business in Fremantle.
The Sister Port Agreement between the Ports of Fremantle and Nagoya was signed 40 years ago, in 1983. Since that time, the two ports’ irreplaceable affiliation has helped to deepen mutual understanding through personal exchanges.
The ceremony began with a Welcome to Country dance performance by the Wadumdah Noongar Dance Group. During the ceremony, Mr. Michael Parker, Chief Executive Officer of the Fremantle Ports, Consul General Naito and Mr. Tomoya Yamashita, Vice Chairperson of the Nagoya Port Assembly gave congratulatory addresses.
The ceremony ended with an exchange of gifts by Mr. Chris Sutherland, Chairman of the Board of the Fremantle Ports, and Mr. Yamashita to commemorate and further strengthen this long-lasting relationship.
